It is possible for tourists to obtain a one month visa extension in Kunming.  The price is usually 160 RMB for citizens of most countries, except for Americans who are charged over 400 RMB.   It takes 5 days to process a visa extension in Kunming.  American tourists and travelers with time limitations are encouraged to obtain visa extensions in Xiaguan (approximately 4 hours by bus from Kunming) near Dali.  In Xiaguan the 160 RMB price is the same for all tourists, including Americans, and visa extensions are usually issued in less than 30 minutes.  Xiaguan also has one of the nicest PSB offices in the country, making one of the shortest waits for a visa extension in China even more pleasant.
