Dai Minority Cuisine Tours – Kunming, Yunnan Province, China
Dai Minority Cuisine
傣族菜
About this place
Dai food is similar to Thai food in that it combines a lot of sour, spicy, and sweet flavors. At the same time Dai cuisine still incorporates quite a bit of Chinese culinary influence. Dai food comes highly recommended by this author, especially compared to the regular Chinese food in Kunming. There are two Dai Minority restaurants near the north gate of Yunnan University. One can easily spot the restaurants by their bamboo decor. It is best to sample as many dishes as possible so bring your appetite and a few friends to share the experience with. The author’s only suggestion in terms of recommended dishes is to order the pineapple rice instead of regular white rice to compliment the meal.
How to get there: The two restaurants are located on the little road that is perpendicular to the larger road that borders the north side of Yunnan University. If walking there from Yunnan University, walk out of the north gate, cross the street and walk up the little road straight ahead. There is a grassy island that you see in the middle of the street in front of the north gate - the road is on the other side of that island. There are a bunch of dvd and software shops, clothing stores, internet cafes, a cinema, and restaurants on this road.
