Qanat of Zarch
قنات زارچ
About this place
A qanat or kariz or foggaras, is a system for transporting water from an aquifer or water well to the surface, through an underground aqueduct. Iran has thousand hectares of arid and semi-arid desert regions, where Evaporation of surface water is considerable. So, for centuries our ancestors provided water for cities and villages by means of qanat.
Karez are constructed as a series of well-like vertical shafts, connected by a gently sloping tunnel. This taps into underground water and delivers it to the surface by gravity, without need for pumping. The vertical shafts along the underground channel are purely for maintenance purposes, and water is typically used only once it emerges from the daylight point.
But underground, it has tunnels and rooms to access the water, service the qanat, etc., which are so strange and astonishing.
Qanat of Zarch with about 100 kilometers length is the longest and also the oldest qanat of the world.
