Chairman Mao’s Villa (Mao Zhu Xi Gu Ju)
毛主席故居
About this place
Chairman Mao’s Villa was a retreat house for the Chairman and other privileged members of the communist Party. It consists of Meiling Buildings One, Two and Three.
Meiling Building One consists of a bedroom, a sitting room, a reception room, and a formal dining room. The same grey chair where the great leader once wielded power from is still there. The chair and lamps are still in the same semi-circular configuration as they were 27 years ago. The bedroom is furnished with plain pink and white colored, fifties-style furniture. Next to the large bed hangs Mao's blue and white striped king size bathrobe.
Meiling Building Two, the assembly hall, has a huge lobby cloaked in heavily worn curtains. The hall, which contains hundreds of red upholstered chairs facing the stage, is cordoned off while the lobby is open to the public. On the balcony there is a wicker chair placed in a certain position as it was placed in the past, which includes a framed photograph hanging next to it. Visitors are allowed to sit on the chair and take photos as a souvenir.
Meiling Building Three was Mao’s private indoor swimming pool. The pool is 30 meters in length and six lanes wide. It is lined with tiles with stainless steel ladders.
Meiling was opened to visitors in 1993.
