At a height of 2563 meters, the Shivapuri hill is the second-highest peak close to the Kathmandu valley. It is the source of the sacred rivers Bishnumati and Bagmati. Its densely forested 159 square kilometers are home to 177 different kinds of birds, including at least nine vulnerable species; 102 different species of butterflies, including many rare and endangered species; and 129 different types of mushrooms. Numerous surveys have shown the presence of numerous valuable creatures in the park, such as deer, wild boar, Himalayan black bears, and Indian leopards.
