Tour Description

Discover one of the most importants harbours of the Mediterranean sea.

First of all we will go to La Manga “the Sleeve” is a strip of land of de 24 km long.  Its foundation was caused because of the sand sedimentation of the dominating currents of the area.

Driving back to Cartagena we will stop in the lighthouse of Cabo de Palos. Its lighthouse began operating on January 31, 1865. The cape is part of a marine reserve, the Reserva Marina de Cabo de Palos e Islas Hormigas.

Once we have visited this two special villages we will take a special road back to Cartagena which drives next to Portman bay. This bay was founded by romans, its location next to the different mines made that this bay was a key point during the romans period until the 20th century when the mines closed down.

This road will drive us to “La Concepción” Castle where we will have great panoramic views of the Royal Marine, the quayside and the modernist city center of Cartagena.

After, we will introduce the history of Cartagena visiting the Interpretation Center of the Punic Walls and the Roman Theatre discovered by chance and recently restored.

Through the Calle Mayor we will have a general idea about the economical boom suffered during the 19th century: The Town hall is a triangular-shaped building with three different façades, the Cervantes House the façade contains the white belvederes so typical of Cartagena, the Casino The 18th century doorway is the only reminder left of the building's origins, finishing with the Great Hotel built in the style of the Viennese and French modernist schools, the hotel has two façades joined by a rotunda crowned with a spectacular dome.
