Beijing Nanluoguxiang Hutong walking tour
One of the oldest blocks in Beijing, Nanluogu Alley was built at the same time as the Dadu capital of Yuan Dynasty, and is the only well-preserved hutong countryard from this time. The area is pehaps the largest and highest-grade chessboard-like traditional residential area in China. Many high-rank officials, noble lords and celebrities lived here in the Ming Dynasty, and each hutong display remnants of this history. There are eight hutongs runing both west and east from Nanluogu alley respectively, creating a fishbone or centipede shape. Therefore, Nanluogu alley is also known as centipede Alley.
