Situated in the country's highland area, Kandy is a destination popularly hailed as Sri Lanka's cultural and spiritual capital. The town is best known historically for being the last stronghold of the Kandyan empire, so it has experienced plenty of interesting events in its past, with the legacies of some still evident in its contemporary culture. The town is a fascinating place to wander around and a sightseeing attraction in its own right, however the UNESCO World Heritage site known as the Temple of the Tooth is possibly the area's biggest draw card and its most photographed landmark. Kandy is four hours away by train from the capital Colombo.

RAMAYANA TOUR OF SRI LANKA ( 9 NIGHTS / 10 DAYS)

RAMAYANA TOUR OF SRI LANKA ( 9 NIGHTS / 10 DAYS)

Day 1 -Colombo / Chilaw / Sigiriya
Arrival, welcome and assistance at the Airport and proceed to Chilaw and visit Munneswaram Temple. It is believed that Munneswaram predates the Ramayana and a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva was located here. A Shiva Lingam was already here when Lord Rama visited this place. Lord Rama after his victorious battle left for Ayodhya with Sita in one of King Ravana's vimanas. He felt he was being followed by Bramhaasthi dosham (a malevolent black shadow) as he had killed King Ravana who was a Brahmin. When the Vimana was passing over Munneswaram, he felt the vimana vibrating, and realised the "Brahmaasthi Dosham" was not following him at this particular point. Proceed to Manavari. Manavari is the first place where Lord Rama installed the Shiva Lingam and prayed after the end of the war with King Ravana.

Day 2 -Sigiriya / Koneswaram Temple / Sigiriya
After breakfast at the hotel, leave for Trincomalee and visit Koneshwaram temple. Myths surrounding the temple of Koneswaram associate it with the popular Indian epic Ramayana, and its legendary hero-king Rama. Koneswaram was developed in the post classical era, between 300 CE and 1600 CE by kings of the Tamil Pandyan and Chola empires. Return to Sigiriya for the night.

Day 3 -Sigiriya / Dambulla / Nalanda Gedige / Kandy
After breakfast at the hotel visit Sigiriya Rock Fortress built 5th century A.D, see the Water Garden, Boulder Garden, Mural Paintings, the Mirror Wall, the Lion's Paws and the Royal Swimming Pool on top. On completion leave for Kandy. visit Nalanda Gegige and the Dambulla Cave Temple, the most impressive of Sri Lanka's cave Temples. On completion leave for Kandy. In the evening visit the Temple of the Tooth Relic and thereafter witness a cultural show. Overnight stay at Kandy.

Day 4 - Kandy / Seetha Kotuwa / Gurulupotha / Weragantota / Kandy
Leave for Mahiyangana and visit Seetha Kotuwa, Sitadevi was kept in queen Mandothari's palace until she was moved to Sita Kotua and then on to Ashoka Vatika (the remains are the remnants of later civilizations) and leave for Weragantota. It is believed to be the first place where Sitadevi was brought into Lanka in King Ravana's Vimana. On completion leave for Kandy. In the evening visit the Temple of the Tooth Relic and thereafter witness a cultural show. Overnight stay at Kandy.

Day 5 - Kandy/ Sita Tear Pond / Chariot Path / Ramboda
After breakfast at the hotel leave for Ramboda, enroute visiting the Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya. During the afternoon proceed to Pussallawa and visit Sita Tear Pond and Chariot Path, the place where Lord Hanuman first set his foot on mainland Lanka. This mountain range is believed to be the route in which King Ravana took Sitadevi from his capital city Lankapura to Ashoka Vatika, which was a paradise on earth. Overnight stay in Ramboda.

Day 6 - Ramboda / Baktha Hanuman Temple / Manikattutheru / Nuwara Eliya
Leave for Nuwara Eliya via Ramboda. Enroute visit the Sri Baktha Hanuman Temple Ramboda. On this hill of Ramboda, Hanuman was searching for Sitadeve. On completion proceed to visit Manikattutheru. This is a rock in Labukelle estate where Lord Hanuman met Sitadevi on his way to announce this happy information to Lord Rama. In the afternoon visit the Gayathri Peetam temple, the first and the foremost temple built for Gayathri Amman in Sri Lanka.

Day 7 - Nuwaraeliya / Gawagala/ Sita Amman Temple
After breakfast at the hotel leave for Walapane and visit Gawagala where King Ravana had his dairy farm. Afternoon visit Sita Amman Temple. The stream that runs from the hill catered to the needs of Sitadevi during her stay at Ashok Vatika. She is said to have bathed in this stream. Overnight stay in Nuwara Eliya

Day 8 -Nuwaraeliya / Divrumpola / Isthripura / Ella
Proceed to Ella via Welimada. Enroute visit Divrumpola. Divurumpola means a 'place of oath'. This is the place where Sita underwent the "Agni" test. She came through unscathed and proved her innocence and purity. Upon completion visit Sthripura and Kanda Kattu gala. Sthripura means an area of women in Sinhalese. There are many ntruding tunnels and caves in this area. This seems to be a part of a great ingenious network of paths, which are interconnected to all the major areas of King Ravana's city. Sitadevi took baths in this very stream, dried her hair sitting on a rock, and put clips to her hair, hence this rock is known as Konda Kattu Gala.

Day 9 - Ella / Rawana Cave / Colombo
After Breakfast leave for Colombo. Enroute visit Rawana Water Fall and Rawana Cave. These tunnels prove beyond doubt the architectural brilliance of King Ravana. These tunnels served as a quick means of transport through the hills and also as a secret passage and networked all the important cities, airports and dairy farms. Overnight stay in Colombo.

Day 10 -Colombo / Kelaniya Temple / Airport
Transfer to the Airport, enroute visit Colombo city and Kelaniya Temple. After King Ravana's death, Vibeeshana was crowned King of Lanka by Lakshmana at Kelaniya. There are murals enshrined outside the Buddhist temple depicting the crowning of Vibeeshana.
