Boyana church

The Boyana church is a medieval Bulgarian Orthodox church situated at the foot of the Vitosha Mountains, in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. In 1979, the building was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The church was built on different stages: in the 10th, 13th and 19th c. In the yard of the church is the grave of one of the last Bulgarian queens: Eleonora. She protected the church from desctruction in the 19th c. Next to the grave is a one hundred year old tree, imported by the Bulgarian king in the past from North America. Our king Ferdinand was keen on botany.
The church is famous with its frescoes, painted by an unknown local painter. You can see the miracles of St Nicolas inside and the famous Last Supper.
