Located in the far west of Shenzhen, close to the east bank of the mouth of the Pearl River, is the ancient city of Nantou (a.k.a. Xin’an city). Nantou is one of the earliest urban areas in what is now Shenzhen and was a busy commercial port in the Ming Dynasty. Excavations in this area have revealed evidence of civilization as far back as the Shang Dynasty (1700 –1100BC), contradicting the traditional believe that until relatively recent times Guangdong was a forlorn wilderness to which errant officials were exiled.

Nantou is still home to thousands of residents today. They mostly live in modern apartment blocks within the city’s ancient walls. Between the functional white-tiled blocks, architectural gems from bygone days, such as the Dongguan Clubhouse, Sir Xinguo’s Shrine and the Baode Shrine, are preserved.   Conspicuous for its European style, the Foundling Hospital is a reminder of foreign influences in this part of China. Today, it functions as a church for Nantou’s Catholics.

A museum, located near the South Gate provides an excellent insight into the city’s past with dozens of excavated artefacts on show. Unfortunately, the captions have not yet been translated into English. The RMB20 entrance charge includes a bilingual map of Nantou.

If you prefer to experience history with a sense of continuity, Nantou Ancient City is a treat. This is a lived-in, historical area, as opposed to a museum-type showpiece. Life goes on, somewhat changed, somewhat the same, in its narrow alleys: Farmers sell vegetables in the arches of its gates, as they have been doing for centuries; The heaps of fresh incense ash in its ancient shrines indicate that these deities are still being worshiped; Children play in streets pungent with the smell of the same foods their ancestors cooked and ate; and, open doorways provide flashing glimpses of meals being prepared, intense mahjong games and other scenes of family life. The contrast with the wide soulless roads and department stores outside its gates is dramatic.

For a similar but quieter experience check out Dapeng Ancient City.

Nantou’s South Gate can be entered from Shennan Boulevard, the far western end of Shennan Road, close to its intersection with Nanxin Road. Bus nos. 201, 301, 305, 310 and 355 go in this direction.

Alternatively, Nantou can be entered from Zhongshan Park from its south side.

Zhongshan Park is dedicated to one of Guangdong’s most celebrated sons, Dr. Sun Yat-sen, who is represented in a large sculpture at the park’s main entrance. In Hero-Gathering Lawn, several local historical heroes from ancient and modern times are honoured with sculptures by renowned artists. Driving home the revolutionary spirit of the park, a monument to martyrs of the liberation struggle stands among trees in the south side.

Although Zhongshan Park is not as pretty or as tidy as Lotus Hill Park, its proximity to Nantou Ancient City  -- Nantou can be entered from the park’s southern edge -- makes it worth a peek. A stroll on the lawns by Zhongshan Park’s lake will be a pleasant conclusion to exploring the crowded lanes of Nantou.

Zhongshan Park’s main gate can be entered from Shennan Boulevard, the far western end of Shennan Road, near Nanshan Bus Station. Alternatively, the park can be entered from the north side of Nantou Ancient City.

Dong Men 东门

Dong Men is a shopping district consisting of department stores, supermarkets, shops and stalls. It is centred on two parallel pedestrian streets with several smaller streets and alleys traversing it, creating a labyrinth in which every available space is used to sell something. Shops range from holes-in-the-wall to retail chains like Baleno, Giordano and the odd foreign brand shop, such as Addidas. Fashion wear, sports wear, jewellery, shoes, handbags, toys, CDs, DVDs, video games, traditional medicine...the list goes on and on. Touts guide punters to massage houses, nail salons and tattoo parlours. Occasionally, monks offer palm readings. Except for retail chain stores with prices clearly displayed, bargaining will be required.

If you do nothing else in Shenzhen, fit in a visit to Dong Men. It’s a wonderfully vibrant area to explore and a lot of the city’s young go there to stroll around, hang out and eat from its snack stalls and restaurants. It can be crowded at any time of the week but on weekends and holidays it seems like the whole population of the city is trying to squeeze into a few small streets.

How to get there
This area can be reached by bus no 102, 113,103, and 203. Head down one of the pedestrian streets that run perpendicular to Dong Men Zhong Lu (Dong Men Central Road) near the Dong Men footbridge. (There are more shops on the opposite side of Dong Men Zhong Lu). From there just wander and follow the crowd. By Metro, get off at Lao Jie station and leave from exit A. Turn left and you’ll soon be in the thick of it.

If you’re into Chinese culture or just love to take beautiful pictures, you should check out the Twenty-Four Histories Academy (二十四史书院) in Shenzhen. It’s inside the north part of Gankeng Ancient Town (甘坑古镇), in Longgang District.

The place covers around 30,000 square meters—not super huge like a theme park, but big enough to walk around slowly and enjoy the traditional vibe. It’s beautifully designed with classic Chinese architecture—red walls, wooden halls, curved roofs, and peaceful gardens. You’ll often see people wearing Hanfu (traditional Chinese clothing) and taking amazing photos here.

It’s a peaceful and elegant place, very different from the busy city outside. If you’re already planning to visit Gankeng Ancient Town, don’t miss this lovely cultural spot!

OCT-LOFT (OCT stands for Overseas Chinese Town) started out, appropriately for Shēnzhèn, as a TV manufacturing base before it was converted into a creative industries hub. Staying here is recommended, if you can snag a room at the hip Shēnzhèn Loft Youth Hostel, formerly a factory workers' dormitory complex. Note that OCT-LOFT isn't actually served by OCT metro station.

The park occupies a 13-kilometre long stretch of reclaimed land along the southern coast of Shenzhen on the north shore of Shenzhen Bay (Deep Bay), starting west near Shenzhen Bay Bridge at Wanghai roadand ending at the Hongshulin Nature Reserve. It spans much of the coastline of Nanshan and Futian districts. It runs along much of the length of Binhai and Binhe Boulevards and occupies an area of 108.07 hectares (267.0518 acres).
The park is divided into two sections, namely Shenzhen Bay Coastal Recreation Zone(深圳湾滨海休闲带) at its South West side and Hongshulin Coastal Ecological Park(红树林海滨生态公园) at its Eastern side. The latter is situated within the Hongshulin Nature Reserve, a habitat of numerous endangered bird species and is also known for its mangrove.
The entire area of the park opened on August 6, 2011, days before the 2011 Summer Universiade that took place in Shenzhen. The Hongshulin Coastal Ecological Park was opened earlier in December 2000.
