About this place

Widely recognized as a first-class Shanghai restaurant, M on the Bund is perhaps the most celebrated restaurant in the city.  Despite the ups and downs of the restaurant business, M on the Bund has managed to succeed for 5 years, a long time in the life of any restaurant!  I had dinner here for the first time since my move here, and I was impressed with the meal, the service, and the ambiance.

The ambiance is pleasant in a classic style without much to draw your eye away from the view of the Pudong skyline.  The most noticeable (and memorable) design elements were the beautiful stemware and plates. I  wanted to take it all home with me! The staff was very service oriented, timing the meal perfectly and not rushing us out of the busy restaurant. The bar, in the back of the restaurant, is warm and cozy; a great place for a romantic drink.

Our meal was only partly successful. Half the table was extremely happy, while the other half was merely happy enough to eat about three quarters of their main course. Popular choices were the gnocchi and the lamb, the big loser was the suckling pig – not much flavor and a little too greasy.

Prices are on par with most of the restaurants on the Bund, around 800RMB per person for a cocktail, appetizer, main course, dessert, and bottle of wine for the table.  While it is indeed expensive, I recommend this restaurant, because it is still a highlight of Shanghai’s restaurant scene.  M on the Bund enjoys a unbeatable location with an undeniably beautiful view, and guests will not be disappointed by the ambiance.

How to get there:  Take Metro Line 2 to Henan Zhonglu Station. Walk for 15 minutes south on Henan Zhonglu. Take a left on Guangdong Lu. M on the Bund is in the building on the left just before you reaching the Bund.
