As the beginning of Maine Silk Road, Quanzhou was the most open city in the ancient China especially in the Ming and Song Dynasties. It absorbed all the different cultures from all over the world, there are temples, religious, architectures,  etc.

This village is famous for the unique architectures and the special wonderful women there.

As you can see from the pictures, all the main walls are made by Oysters' shells, indicating ancient Chinese people's wisdom and creativity.  The shells hold each other tightly, keep the house dry, stable, windproof, and waterproof .

The other part of the village is the women. It's flowers' paradise, because there are some fresh and colorful flowers on every woman's head, no matter young or old, fat or thin, what a colorful world here!

Huian Women

There is a special group of people in Fujian province, unlike the majority of Chinese women.

Check out their form-fitting outfits, colorful head scarves with lots of dots or flowers on them, and short top under which you can see their strong and flat bellies. Their pants are long and loose, with a wide silver belt above them, this is absolutely a quite attractive outfit for ladies, which shows their nice figure naturally in the best way.

But their character is probably quite different than you think. They are independent, strong, and diligent, they are the most important part of their local culture and their family, they are HUIAN WOMEN.

Actually this kind of outfit was from the Qing Dynasty, which is more than 100 years ago, and they have changed the style a little bit for the convenience of working.

There was a story of how strong Huian women are.

In 1958, people needed to keep water urgently to maintain their regular lives and avoid the big floods, but there weren’t enough people to do the work, so all the younger women  in Huian county united together to participate in this huge project, It’s a 105.8 square meters area, and 126,000,000 cubic meters reservoir, named by Huian Women” Huian Women Reservoir”.

They keep the typical Quanzhou sprit – Keep fighting, never say die. That’s the reason why there are so many enterprises in Quanzhou, they are producing many important products all over the world.

Huian women are good at working, and taking care of their family, it’s a great balance. Huian women do stone caving, fishing, carrying heavy items, and all the other daily work, which is always considered too much for women in the long history of China.

Come here to take a look at these amazing women, they are worth knowing about.

We've seen Oyster houses last time, there is another place near there - Stone Street.

It’s an old street back to the Song dynasty with a length of 1500 meters. The government built this street by green slates, to help people carry silk sugar, tea and China to the boat and delivery to all over the world. But there was a problem, people found when they came back from other country, the boats would be too light to run, and it was dangerous, so they picked up lots of oysters shells from The Persian gulf to put on the boat and make it heavy and safe. When they got back to China, they abandoned those shells on the land, local people found those shells are thick and huge, so they made use of them to build houses.

Old people said, one of history’s greatest explorers, Marco Polo, used to walk on this street and send the Mongolia princess off to get marry with Persian Prince.

As we walk though this street, we get to Wenying Yard, where used to be busy in the old times. A tower standing by the water, it used to be seven floors as the navigation for people go to the sea, now it’s only three floors, what a pity.

At the end of the street, there is a temple. After the temple, we can see a huge rock, there are two Chinese characters on it ”吞海“, means swallow the sea, actually, it’s a good meaning for people going out finishing or trading, to be safe and sound.

There are too many stories about this place, the amazing Marine Silk Road, let’s check more next time.

If you are interested in ancient Chinese culture, you can't miss Quanzhou, a city which has different religions home and abroad exist harmoniously and many historic evidences well-reserved. You can either spend one day for a short visit or have a two or three days tour to explore the whole Quanzhou. As a local tour guide, I will show you this special city in China.

Quanzhou was China's major port for foreign traders, who knew it as Zaiton or "Zayton", an Arabic name(زيتون), once popular in English, means "[City] of Olives" and is a calque of Quanzhou's former Chinese nickname derived from the many oil-bearing tung trees ordered planted by the city's 10th-century ruler Liu Congxiao.

During the 11th through 14th centuries. It was visited by both Marco Polo and Ibn Battuta; both travelers praised it as one of the most prosperous and glorious cities in the world. Medieval Quanzhou was long one of the most cosmopolitan Chinese cities, with folkBuddhist, and Hindu templesIslamic mosques; andChristian churches, including a cathedral (financed by a rich Armenian lady) and two Franciscan monasteries. Andrew of Perugia served as the Roman Catholic bishop of the city from 1322. Odoric of Pordenone was responsible for relocating the relics of the four Franciscans martyred at Thana in India in 1321 to the mission in Quanzhou. Protestant The English Presbyterian missionaries raised a chapel around 1862. The Qingjing Mosque dates to 1009 but is now preserved as a museum. The Buddhist Kaiyuan Temple has been repeatedly rebuilt but includes two 5-story 13th-century pagodas. Among the most popular folk or Taoist temples is that to Guandi (关帝庙), the war god who is honored for his control of weather and wealth. Jinjiang also preserves the Cao'an Temple (草庵寺), originally constructed byManicheans under the Yuan but now used by New Age spiritualists, and a Confucian Temple (文庙Wenmiao).

Quanzhou is generally ignored by Chinese tourists in favor of nearby Xiamen.[42] Nonetheless, Quanzhou was one of the 24 famous historic cultural cities first approved by theChinese government. Notable cultural practices include:

  • Liyuan Opera (梨园戏)
  • Puppet Show (提线木偶戏)
  • Gaojia Opera (高甲戏)
  • Dacheng Opera (打城戏)
  • Nanyin (南音), a musical style dating to the Han but performed in the local dialect[42]
