Statue of Liberty is a gift to the United States from the people of France. It was designed by Frederic Bartholdi and today this colossal statue has become a symbol of freedom and democracy as well as of New York. The Statue of Liberty is a female figure that represents the Roman goddess of freedom that they called Libertas. Bartholdi completed the statue in France, and then it was transported to the USA. The pedestal was completed in the States and positioned on Bedloe´s Island (as it was called then).
It is 46 meters high, but together with its torch rises as high as 93 meters. Since 1984, the Statue of Liberty is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and receives almost 4 million visitors a year.
