In Kowloon’s Whampoa Garden, you can see a big ship on the land! You may ask: How come?

It is due to the giant Whampoa Shipyard.

In the past, Hong Kong had the shipbuilding and ship-repairing industry.  Whampoa Shipyard was even one of the biggest shipyards in Asia.  It employed more than 4000 workers in the 1900s.

In the early 1980s, the richest man in Hong Kong, Mr. Li Ka Shing, redeveloped the whole area.  A department store, i.e. the big ship on the land was built inside the Whampoa Garden for remembering the glorious history of the shipyard and attracting more visitors.

過去香港擁有造船修船等重工業，黃埔船塢就是業界翹楚，作為亞洲最大的船塢之一，在1900年代已聘用員工超過四千。

船塢控制權輾轉落到香港首富李嘉誠手中，長於地產發展的「李超人」把船塢發展成一大型私人屋苑黃埔花園，還特地興建一座船形百貨公司，以紀念船塢的輝煌歷史和吸引更多遊人。現在黃埔花園已成為許多中產人士的安樂窩和遊人假日的好去處。
