Guizhou Province is a poor but colorful land which is located in southwest China. Over 93 percent of the area are mountainous and hilly----the only one with no plain in China . Over 1 third of its 40 million population are ethnic minorities such as, the Miao(Hmong), the Dong, the Buyi, the Shui, etc. The natural scenery is well known as Karst topography includes waterfalls, caverns, valleys, rivers, lakes, mountains, etc. While the minority people and their culture are more interesting. Their daily lives, costumes, hair styles, architectures, festivals and many others are totally different from more times in cities. For thousands of years, because of bad transportation obstructed by huge mountains and valleys, the land and its people are preserved very well. Till nowadays, it is gradually known to the outside. Guizhou will be more and more known, and some will change and disappear with time. Before they disappear, you are sincerely welcome to explore and visit the land.

Everyday, many scheduled trains, bus and flights from other cities and towns are available to the provincial capital----Guiyang City. Then you can start your travel from Guiyang to any cities or towns in the province by scheduled bus or train. And it is a better idea to take a hike or ride a bike to the villages.

When it comes to the southwest of China, the old towns of Dali, Lijiang and Yangshuo attract the most visitors.

But Zhenyuan, a 2,000-year-old river town in under-appreciated Guizhou province, offers adventurous travelers the chance to see something a little different.

It is featured in few travel guides, which is a surprise。

The old streets of Zhenyuan are not as commercialized as the towns mentioned above.

What makes it really stand out is the way it gives the visitor a taste of other great qualities of China, all within a short ride or hike outside town.

The Wuyang River cuts through Zhenyuan and hills and mountains tower over the town. At the northwest edge of the town is the entrance to the southernmost section of the Great Wall.

Many Chinese themselves don’t know that there’s a southern section of the Great Wall so close by.

Zhenyuan’s section of the Great Wall may not be connected to the ones known and loved just outside of Beijing, but it is part of a 300-kilometer wall that extends east into Hunan province that protected the Ming Dynasty from the local Miao ethnic tribes more than 500 years ago.

The views over the town are spectacular. During spring and summer the surrounding terraced rice fields outside Zhenyuan are the stuff of landscape photographers' dreams.

When Cal, Wade and I were on our way to our student Yanhong's village. We saw lots of stunning views. This picture was taken in a place called Yunding in early Aug. Yunding is more pretty during rice harvest season around Sept. We rented a minivan from Guiyang. It took us about half an hour to get Yunding.

The second and third photo were taken in our student Yanhong's village. People there were very nice. They even dressed us in their traditional clothes. The third one is their casket cave.
