Versailles Palace
Chateau de Versailles
About this place
In the 17th and the 18th centuries Chateau de Versailles was the political center of France. Louis XIII moved to Versailles and transformed his hunting lodge into this beautiful palace in the 17th century. Although Versailles was the center of France only for 100 years it is still one of the most fascinating palaces in the world.
The entire complex consists of the Palace, the Garden, the Grand Trianon and Marie-Antoinette´s Estate. The Palace consists of several rooms used for different events. The Hall of Mirrors (Galerie des Glaces) was used for many ceremonies where the elite of the period came to socialize and entertain the French court. Kings and Queens Chambers are also worth seeing to get an idea on how they lived and what luxuries they enjoyed.
Le Grand Trianon is a beautiful palace built of pink marble and surrounded by gardens. Even Napoleon restored and used the Grand Trianon with his wife.
The Marie-Antoinette´s Estate was opened for public in 2006 and tells a story about life preferences of this famous Queen. She used to come here and enjoy her privacy. She was responsible for the decoration of her estate.
The Garden is a typical French royal Garden with wells, fountains, green labyrinths and sculptures.
What was once royal estate today is a museum. Walking from one chamber to another leaves plenty of room for imagination of many intrigues and ceremonies evolved in the luxury estate while numerous ordinary people suffered of food shortage, paying enormous taxes in order to support the extravagant life of French royalties.
Marie Antoinette, one of the most famous and important residents of the Versailles Palace is still remembered for her cruel statement. She lived in priceless luxury while people starved. She didn´t care much so she said: ˝If they have no bread, let them eat cake˝.
