Man in the Iron Mask
L´Homme au Masque de Fer
About this place
Ile Sainte-Marguerite is the largest of the Lérins Islands and the most famous for the Fort Royal, constructed in 1600s, a fortress prison in which during the 17th century, for 10 years, was imprisoned the Man in the Iron Mask. The island is located just half a mile from Cannes, a 15 minute ferry ride away.
The prisoner was held in a cell with multiple doors wearing a mask covering his face. This was an important prisoner with special treatment, and whose wishes fulfilled. Of course, except the one regarding his freedom. Some historians believe that this prisoner could be the son or brother of Louis XIV.
The secret identity of this man has been a subject to many books and stories. After his death in 1703, after the total of 34 years of imprisonment he was buried under the name of Marchioly.
