Trafalgar Square
About this place
Trafalgar Square is the largest square in London, situated in the center of the city. It is a public area as well as a tourist attraction. The square is designed by Sir Charles Barry, and it is named Trafalgar to commemorate the Battle of Trafalgar. In the middle of the square is located a 56 meters high column on top of which is a 5.5 meters high statue honoring the admiral Nelson who led the army in the famous battle. Four bronze lions made out of metal from guns from old battles guard the Nelson´s column and the statue.
On the north side of the square is the National Gallery founded in 1824 and it possesses one of the world´s biggest picture collections.
On the east of the Trafalgar Square there is St Martin´s-in-the-Fields Church from the 13th century in which are located several tombs of famous people from history.
The Trafalgar Square is also a home to the world´s smallest police station which was equipped with light and a phone so that police officers could call for assistance, but today it serves as a broom cupboard for city cleaners.
