Yuanyang lies in the relatively underdeveloped southeast part of Yunnan, Honghe Hani and Yi People's Autonomous Region, about 300km south of Kunming. Yuanyang is renowned for its rice terraces, which claim as the world's largest and most spectacular one, crafted out by bare hands by the Hani people one thousand years ago and is still in use today. Because it is a relatively inaccessible part of Yunnan, the subtropical area escaped heavy development for tourism, and has so far been overlooked by the big masses. It is a self sustaining ecosystem and a perfect example of a symbiosis with nature. During winter to early spring, the entire field is irrigated with spring water from the forest above to rejuvenate and getting prepared for the next season. The Hani people have repeated this for more than a thousand years.

Tiger Leaping Gorge (Chinese: 虎跳峡; pinyin: Hǔtiào Xiá) is a canyon on the Yangtze River – locally called the Golden Sands River (金沙江; Jīnshā Jiāng) – located 60 km north of Lijiang City, Yunnan in southwestern China. It is part of the Three Parallel Rivers of Yunnan Protected Areas World Heritage Site. Tiger Leaping Gorge is a contender for the world's deepest river canyon, depending on the exact definition used. The inhabitants of the gorge are primarily the indigenous Naxi people, who live in a handful of small hamlets. Their primary subsistence comes from grain production and foreign hikers. The gorge is not considered navigable. In the early 1980s, four rafters attempted to go down the gorge and were never seen again. In 1986, the first known successful attempt to sail through the gorge was made by the first expedition to float down the entire length of the Yangtze, starting at the river's high source at the Gelandandong glacier lake.

Due to its position as a link to Beijing, Juyongguan Pass was one of the most strategically important parts of the Great Wall of China.  Originally constructed during the fifth century, it was later rebuilt during the Ming dynasty.  Juyongguan was neglected during the Qing Dynasty, but has since been renovated and opened to the public.

The renovated section forms a circle with the central entrance to the pass at the bottom of the valley.  Most visitors only walk up and down one half of the circle.  It is very steep at some points, but a half-circuit can still be done in 2 hours.  Guard towers are located on the mountains and Ming dynasty style iron cannons sit by the entrance to the pass.

How to Get There

Tourist Bus (recommended when available) - A simple and cheap option is to take a Beijing tourist bus.  They provide one route that visits Juyongguan and Dingling (定陵) which is one of the Ming Tombs.

Public Bus - Bus 919 快车 (kuai che) stops at Juyongguan.  It is just a short walk up the hill from the bus station.  Alternatively, you can take bus 919 支线 (zhi xian) to Nankou (南口), and then take a cab to Juyongguan for about 20 yuan.  Buses numbered 919 leave from the messy Deshengmen (德胜门) bus station which is about 500 meters east of the Jishuitan (积水潭) subway station (subway line 2).

It is not possible to walk from the Juyongguan section to the Badaling (八达岭) section of the wall.

Organized Tour - If you go with a tour group, try to pick one that not only gets you where you want to go, but also doesn't take you where you don't want to go.  Tourists are sometimes not allowed to leave "factories" or "galleries" until they buy something which is, of course, overpriced.

Like that in many places of China, a legend has developed around the idea that a lord of the Han Dynasty (206BC– 220AD) who used to live isolated there was buried at the foot of the Qingyan Mountain, now known as Zhangjiajie Mountain. This is only since 1994 that the place is known under the name of "Zhangjiajie".
