Shenzhen City Travel Guide

Shenzhen (深圳) is located in the south of Guangdong province straddling the Mainland China’s border with Hong Kong. Despite being China’s most affluent city, Shenzhen is often overlooked by travellers. This border boomtown is, not surprisingly, usually regarded only as a symbol of China’s economic reform. Due to government policies and its geographical location, Shenzhen went from being a small fishing village to a bustling metropolis of 10 million people in the space of twenty years. Nonetheless, Shenzhen has more to offer the traveller than just an example of the dizzying speed of progress that China has been making since the 1980s. It is a diverse city peopled by immigrants from all over the country with great restaurants, bars, clubs, shops, scenic areas and, if you dig deep enough, even historical and cultural attractions. Shenzhen is still growing and still developing an identity. Its nascent character makes it difficult to define. Now, with Synotrip as your guide, staying in Shenzhen for a few days and discovering what lies beneath the surface of this unique city will be easier and more rewarding.

Theme parks feature high on the official list of Shenzhen’s tourist attractions and Window on the World is the most famous. A notice at the gateway boldly declares, “See the world’s landmarks in one day.” What it neglects to mention is that you will be seeing miniature replicas of them. The park also has some rides and “cultural” performances.

Zhongying Street is one of the eight officially recommended tourist attractions in Shenzhen. The attraction of this street is that one side is in the Chinese Mainland and the other is in Hong Kong, earning it the nickname "one street two systems." Unfortunately, foreign passport holders cannot enter Zhongying Street.

The tourist brochure for the Meisha Beach Parks needlessly states that this area “is a good land where people lived, procreated and done diving into the sea” since ancient times. You might not want to live or procreate here but it is not a bad spot to feel some sand between your toes and gaze at fishing boats at work.

Splendid China and China Folk Culture Village are two theme parks combined into one. They attempt to do for China what Window on the World does for the rest of the planet. Splendid China represents China’s architectural wonders. In China Folk Culture Village, happy, shiny Chinese ethnic minorities give demonstrations of their craftwork and dance performances to gaping tourists.

This restaurant serves Cantonese snacks in the form of rice, noodle and dumpling based dishes. Their specialty is changfen (rice-sheet wraps with meat and vegetable fillings) and wanton. The iced-tea with lemon is a great thirst quencher. Service is friendly and fast. Some of the staff even speak passable English.  A stomach can be filled here for about RMB20.
