Shanghai, Shopping

Shopping in Shanghai is certainly different than Hong Kong or New York. The city is developing its own unique style that will very soon compete with the ultimate shopping experience anywhere in the world.  Right now there are already some wonderful high end boutiques, as well as large scale designer shopping. Some notables including Cartier, Marc Jacobs, Gucci, and Prada will keep even the most fashioned shoppers happy. For those with a more limited budget, there are plenty of special areas that are fun to wander about and gather less expensive, yet equally cool and interesting items. Keep an eye on this section, as a variety of shopping areas will be highlighted in order to keep all types of shoppers satisfied.

The adult toy store on Nanjing Dong Lu contains a small selection of adult only products.  Typically stores selling these products in China are little hole-in-the-wall stores that hide behind signs that say “health care” in Chinese (保健, baojian).  It’s interesting to see a store like this so prominently placed in such a high-traffic area of Shanghai.

Jingwen Flower Market is such a peaceful pleasure, especially considering its somewhat ironic location by the wild and stressful XiangYang market.  The market is two stories filled with stall after stall of lilies, orchids, roses, and every other plant imaginable (both real and silk). The combined aroma of all of the flowers is simply wonderful.
