The strip of bars on Tongren Road was built to replace the wild bar scene that was shut down on Maoming Road in 2003. Many notable Maoming Road locales have in turn opened a second location on Tongren, such as Blue Frog, Judy’s and MZone. The scene here is a little older than it was on Maoming. One might say ’a little less college, a little more business’. This makes sense, as the bars are directly next to the Kerry Center and hundreds of other office buildings along Nanjing Road. That being said, there certainly is no lack of activity on Tongren Road. Crowds still get pretty noisy, as groups bar hop taking advantage of drink specials and meeting various mates at different venues.
Times have certainly changed since the world of Maoming, which prior to its closing, was THE heart of Shanghai’s social scene. However, since its closing most of us feel the change has been for the better. In addition to the effort to recreate the Maoming’s atmosphere on Tongren Road, Shanghai’s bar scene has expanded throughout the city, creating pockets of activity around the city. While it means there is no hub of social activity anymore, the progression allows each new small hub of bars to emit a different feel. Tongren Road generally feels a little like a meat market late at night, but is a great place to grab some drinks with coworkers or friends during Happy Hour. Check out articles on Julu Road and Hengshan Road for the feel of other popular bar districts.

How to get there: Take Metro Line 2 to JingAn Temple Station. Exit onto Nanjing Rd, and head heats. Take a right on Tongren Lu; the bars are on the left.
