The bars actually on Hengshan Rd can be a little seedy. When locals refer to the bars on Hengshan, they may really mean the bars that have sprouted on the streets that intersect Hengshan Rd, such as Dongping Rd, YongJia Rd, Yueyang Rd and Fenyang Rd. The crowds that hit these spots are usually looking for a more low key night. Patrons’ wishes are easily fulfilled by the many choices of pubs (O’Malley’s, The Blarney Stone, and the British Bulldog) and even a brew house (Paulaner Brauhaus) in this area.
There are a few exceptions to this rule, however. Leftovers from the original type of activity in the Hengshan Rd area, such as Zapata’s and Mural, are still reliable with heavy drink specials and huge crowds prepared for an extended night on the town. Both places have their drawbacks, but those seeking a dose of good (somewhat) clean fun, should check them out. Zapata’s is particularly worth battling the crowds in the summer, as it features an awesome patio and great margarita specials. I also love The Hut, down the street on YongJia Lu, for its semi "local" flavor.
Overall, I recommend this area to people who might not be looking for a crazy night, but still want to take in some of Shanghai’s nightlife. The bars do not sit on top of each other, and it’s a pleasant neighborhood to walk around in the heart of the French Concession). O’Malley’s and Zapata’s are fantastic in the summer, and the Eager Beaver on Yueyang is perfect for a night of beer and darts in the winter. Eager Beaver doubles as an excellent locale for dinner. Other restaurants, Simply Thai, Azul and Viva or Tairyo Teppanyaki, also come recommended in the neighborhood.
How to get there: Take Metro Line 1 to the Hengshan Rd. stop. Exit onto Hengshan Rd and head northeast, for about 10 minutes. Take a right or left on Dongping Lu and wander around; bars are in either direction. See articles on Mural, Simply Thai, and Tairyo Teppanyaki for exact directions to those locations.
