The Presidential Palace appears to be a very popular destination. When we visited there were numerous tour groups. Admission is Y40. One can walk through the many rooms which feature photographs and paintings of significant people from Nanjing’s modern history. The Palace of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom was built here as the official residence of the Heavenly King, Hong Xiuquan. In 1912 Dr. Sun Yatsen took the oath of provisional President. The buildings were occupied by the Japanese during the Anti-Japanese War. In 1946 the Guomingdang Government returned to Nanjing and the compound became the Presidential Palace in 1948. The grounds feature ponds and gardens, and there are many small shops throughout which sell polished stones, jewelry and memorabilia. Outside the palace gates is the Nanjing 1912 complex where you can enjoy refreshments at the restaurants, bars or coffee shops. If you head west from the front gates of the Presidential Palace, a five-minute walk will take you to the Jiangsu Art Gallery. On our visit we saw some recent photographs, as well as watercolours by well-known artists. One can puchase art, or books about art, for reasonable prices.
