Cafes and Teahouses are good places to relax any time during the day. Many are open late and some are open 24/7.
Groups of friends may spend hours in a teahouse drinking tea, talking, playing cards and (too often) smoking cigarettes. Teahouses are obviously not a place to have a large meal with many guests. However, food is available. Chinese food and food that Chinese people consider "Western" is standard grub at most teahouses in Nanjing. An exception to the normal Chinese dining custom of sharing dishes, in the teahouse one dish is for one person only.
