Nanjing Normal University is one of the national key universities under the "211 Project" and also a provincially renowned institution of higher learning. The history of Nanjing Normal University can be traced back to the "Sanjiang Normal Institute" established at the end of the Qing Dynasty. Presently, the university claims three separate campuses, namely the "Suiyuan campus" "Xianlin campus" and "Zijin campus" with a total area of more than 2,000,100 square meters (or more than 200 hectares).

Recent years, Nanjing Normal University has developed into a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary university, including School of Liberal Arts, School of Journalism and Communications, School of Public Administration, Law School, Commercial School, School of Educational Science, School of Foreign Languages, School of Biological Science, School of Geographical Science, School of Music, Fine Art School and etc., totaling 24 schools and departments, as well as more than 50 research institutes.

Nanjing Normal University library, the 3rd largest in Jiangsu Province, claims more than 2,500,000 books. Jingwen Library on Xianlin Campus is the largest university library in Jiangsu province with the most advanced equipments and facilities.
