When you’re busy making money and partying hard, it leaves little time for less important things like heritage, craftsmanship, and creative expressionism. Hong Kong’s art exposition has been long overdue and it has taken a while for it’s art scene to blossom, but in the past few years it has sprouted new roots and is finally gaining some well-deserved exposure.
When a prominent tycoon recently bought Andy Warhol’s psychedelic portrait of Mao Zedong (at the bargain price of HK$135.7 million) people were quick to conclude that Hong Kong was finally on the world’s art map. Mapped or not, it cannot be denied that there is an art scene in Hong Kong with a large number of galleries and artist exhibitions taking place across the city regularly.
Hong Kong’s people are also finally starting to realise that – outside of the plastic shopping malls and away from all the commercialism – this city does actually have some historical heritage that needs to be preserved. Despite the recent relocation and mock replication of the Star Ferry pier, there are a number of sites that have been saved and live on in the form of historical sites and museums.
