Hainan Province

Hainan (海南) Island, located just off of China’s south coast, is a land of emerald mountains and sapphire blue sea.  Hainan has its own culture distinct from that of the Mainland.  In antiquity political exiles were often sent to Hainan as punishment.  Many of them found life on this warm, humid island far more desirable than the frigid north where powers that be could be more closely felt. These exiles often chose to stay in Hainan after their sentence ended, composing poems to the easy tropical lifestyle.  Hainan can become hot and humid during the summer months and typhoons are not uncommon.  However, even during the hottest season, a sea breeze usually blows.  Coconut trees, fresh seafood and an abundance of tropical fruit make Hainan an ideal seaside getaway.

Five Officials Temple, which is part of a much larger architectural complex of memorial structures and temples, was built in honor of (unsurprisingly) five officials who were banished to Hainan Island during the Tang and Song dynasties.  Memorials such as this one say something about Hainan’s character in that so many of its historic sites are in honor of rebels.

Located in the Guo Mao district, this is the one of the first restaurants I came to when I moved to Haikou.  Two hostesses in long silk gowns open the door to a huge circular room with tiled floors and a stage in front upon arrival.  Typical Xinjiang décor of plastic leaves and grapes hang from the lattice roof.  Like most Chinese restaurants a TV dominates the front of

If you like seafood, go directly to this section of town.  A large market full of fresh fish and other seafood fresh off the boats opens up around 5 pm daily.  If you aren't much of a cook, then head for one of the several large, pavilion-type restaurants next to the market.  It can be difficult to tell one from the other.  As you approach, hostesses will beckon you inside.&
