Haikou City Travel GuideHaikou (海口) is a quirky little city that defies any simple definition. A boom town that hasn’t quite caught up with itself, one part is hurling toward the future while the other side pedals by in three-wheeled pedi-cabs. Most visitors to Hainan (海南) see Haikou as a stop-over on their way to the beach resort of Sanya (三亚) at the southern end of the island, but Haikou has much to offer. It is well worth taking a day or two to explore the city’s winding streets and old colonial downtown section. Fresh fruit and great seafood restaurants that are more affordable than in Sanya also make Haikou a pleasant stop.

25 Yuan/ticket Five Officials Temple, which is part of a much larger architectural complex of memorial structures and temples, was built in honor of (unsurprisingly) five officials who were banished to Hainan Island during the Tang and Song dynasties. Memorials such as this one say something about Hainan’s character in that so many of its historic sites are in honor of rebels.

Two hostesses in long silk gowns open the door to a huge circular room with tiled floors and a stage in front upon arrival. At the end of Banqiao Road If you like seafood, go directly to this section of town. A large market full of fresh fish and other seafood fresh off the boats opens up around 5 pm daily. If you aren't much of a cook, then head for one of the several large, pavilion-type restaurants next to the market. It can be difficult to tell one from the other. As you approach, hostesses will beckon you inside.& Tags: seafood

Author: Guest Login to Add to Your GuidebookUsing the different modes of transportation in Haikou is a cultural experience in itself. Within the city there is an efficient bus system that will take you anywhere you want to go. However, if you don’t read Chinese, deciphering the bus routes can be a challenge. Some bookstores sell city maps in English with bus routes marked on them. At Creation Bookstore on the top of Mingju Square, the main downtown shopping area, you can find these maps. Sometimes sell maps on top of the pedestrian bridges as well. Read more... Term of Use | Privacy Policy | ©2010 Synotrip Inc.
