International Phone Calls To and From China

It is easy to make local and international calls from a payphone, hotel or home phone.

It is simple and cheap to get a phone card (IC card) to be used in payphones.  You can buy these in many places including airports and street vendors.  Cards sold in the airport will likely be more expensive but street vendors will sell cards for less than their face value.  Most payphones only accept phone cards but some accept coins. 

You can also find phones at newstands and little hole-in-the-wall shops.  These are likely only worth it if you are making a domestic call. 

Another option you may consider if you have a computer, broadband access and a microphone is Skype.  With Skype you can call phones very cheaply from your computer.  Sometimes the service can be patchy due to network problems.  Many internet cafes now have webcams and microphones as well.

To make a call to China dial:

A - The country exit code - "00" from Britain, New Zealand and most other countries, "011" from Canada and USA, "0011" from Australia,  "900" from India, "001" from South Korea, "095" from Norway, "009" from South Africa and Sweden, "002" from Taiwan and "001" from Thailand.

B - China’s country code - "86" 

C - The area code or "0" if you are calling a cell phone.

D - The phone number. 

To make a call from China dial:

A - The exit code from China - "00"

B - The  country code (See list below)

C - The area code and phone number
