There are 3 good reasons to bike around Beijing. Firstly, when in Rome! According to Katie Melua, there are 9 million bicycles in Beijing, so why not join in the fun and while you’re at it do your bit for reducing pollution caused by car emissions. Secondly, bikes are a good way to avoid grid-locked traffic which is an everyday occurrence in Beijing during rush hour. Thirdly, you tend to hear and see a lot more when you’re cycling, and the city around you comes to life. Even if you just ride around your neighbourhood, biking is a good way to explore the nooks and crannies and usually out of reach places, and to feel part of the rhythm of the city.
The heavy traffic and constant hooting can be a little unnerving at first, however traffic in Beijing generally moves quite slowly so you go at your own merry pace. Most roads have designated bicycle lanes, however motorists and taxi drivers sometimes encroach into these lanes, so don’t assume that it’s just you and your fellow cyclists in the bike lane!
There are many bike shops in Beijing and you can pick up a new bike for anything between 150 and 500 kuai, and less for a second-hand bike. Beijing is so flat you can easily get by without gears so you don’t need anything too sophisticated. Carrefour is a reasonable place to buy new, affordable bikes. Bikes disappear quite quickly so if you opt for a more expensive model make sure you get a good padlock.
