Teaching English in Beijing

For many foreigners who come to Beijing to live, work, travel, or study, teaching English is part of their experience. In Beijing, like anywhere in China, there is a huge demand for English teachers. Provided you meet a number of basic requirements, finding teaching work should be fairly easy. In order to teach, most schools/agencies require you to be a native English speaker. Some require that you have a degree and/or a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) qualification or certificate, and others will specify that you have a minimum of teaching experience. It is therefore advisable to complete a TEFL course before arriving in Beijing. However, being a native English speaker is often all you need to find employment.
There are a number of options available to you as an English teacher. You may end up teaching at an educational institution such as a school/university or language school, or you may tutor privately in your or your students’ home. Some schools will require you to sign a contract, however, in Beijing, where there is a huge demand for teachers, you can be more flexible and determine your own schedule by tutoring privately or sourcing short-term contracts.
Teaching English may not be very lucrative, but it is a good way to meet and interact with local people, and in many instances can act as a form of cultural exchange. This is especially true if you teach teenagers or adults who already speak basic English – you can learn a lot about China from teaching adults. Teaching is also a valuable opportunity to practice Chinese should you be wanting to learn the local language.
Finding English teaching jobs
Most of the local publications aimed at foreigners advertise teaching jobs in the classified sections. Alternatively, you can post your own ad in the classifieds section, enabling prospective students or teaching institutions to find you. A third option is to register with an agency who will find students for you. Beijing Line is one such organization.
