Transportation to and from the airport is pretty easy, but China is still a foreign country with an entirely different language. Therefore, if the idea of taking a taxi or train immediately upon arrival makes you a little uneasy, arrange for a driver to pick you up at the airport and deliver you to your hotel. I certainly recommend this mode of transportation for guests who have never been to China before, or for groups that have more people (or luggage) than will fit in one taxi.
A typical taxi ride from Pudong airport to the center of Puxi costs around 150RMB. For those seeking some peace-of-mind and comfort, it might be worth spending an extra couple hundred RMB on a personal driver. Alternatively, many hotels also offer airport pickup service, so be sure to check with your hotel in advance (although this option is generally more expensive than a taxi as well, some hotels will charge 500RMB or more). Hiring cars is also ideal if you plan do to a lot of touring one day and do not want to deal with multiple taxis. The driver will wait for you while you hop from one point of interest to another, making your sightseeing much more efficient.
My favorite local company that has great cars, friendly service and drivers that speak a little English, is Long Hui Car. I have used this company a number of times and have always been impressed with their service. The prices are reasonable and the drivers are always on time.
